Ledger Stax Manual

Installing Ledger Stax

In this article, we will walk you through the steps of setting up your Ledger wallet for the first time. The steps may differ slightly depending on whether you are setting up your device with or without the Ledger Live app. We highly recommend setting up your device via the Ledger Live app. This will allow you to verify the authenticity of your device, update the operating system, view security tips, and install apps once the setup is complete.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Choose whether to set up the device via Ledger Live Mobile or Ledger Live Desktop.
  2. Give your Ledger a name.
  3. Choose a PIN code.
  4. Decide whether to set up your Ledger as new or restore access to your assets using an existing Secret Recovery Phrase or Ledger Recover.

Step 1: Turn on your Ledger

Press and hold the button on the right for 1 second.
You see: “Ledger. The most trusted security for your digital assets”.
Tap to review the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Download and install Ledger Live

Please note : If you choose to install without Ledger Live, skip this step and go directly to step 3.

Setting up with Ledger Live Desktop

  • Tap “Set up with Ledger Live desktop”.
  • Go to ledger.com/start to download Ledger Live desktop.
  • Connect your Ledger to your computer with the USB cable.
  • Select your device in Ledger Live and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Tap “I'm done” on your Ledger.

If you have already downloaded Ledger Live :

  • Connect your Ledger to your computer.
  • Go to My Ledger.
  • You will be automatically redirected to the device settings.

Set up with Ledger Live Mobile

  • Tap “Set up with Ledger Live mobile”.
  • Scan the QR code to open or download the Ledger Live Mobile app.
  • Make sure Bluetooth® is turned on on your smartphone and your Ledger device.
  • Android users : Enable location services in your phone's settings. Ledger Live never stores your location data, but this is a requirement for Bluetooth® on Android.
  • Once your Ledger device is visible in Ledger Live Mobile, tap it. Review the codes and tap “Yes, they match” to confirm the pairing.

The pairing will remain active in your phone's Bluetooth® settings unless you forget the device.

Step 3: Give your Ledger a name

  • Tap “Set name”.
  • Use the keyboard to give your device a unique name.
  • Confirm the name and continue with the installation.

Step 4: Choose your PIN code

  • Tap “Choose my PIN.”.
  • Set a PIN code of 4 to 8 digits.
  • Confirm your PIN code by entering it again.

Tips:

  • Always choose your own PIN code.
  • An 8-digit PIN code offers the best security.
  • Never use a device that already has a PIN or recovery phrase.

Step 5: Choose how to set up your Ledger

You have two options:

  1. Set it up as a new Ledger

    • New private keys are generated to manage your crypto assets.
    • Write down the 24 words of your Secret Recovery Phrase on the enclosed recovery form.
  2. Restore access to existing assets

    • Recover using an existing Secret Recovery Phrase: This will recover the private keys associated with the recovery phrase.
    • Recover via Ledger Recover.

Follow the on-screen instructions, carefully note the words and check them. Once everything is set up, you can install apps and add accounts via Ledger Live.

Tips to Keep Your Secret Recovery Phrase Safe

  • Keep your recovery phrase offline. Do not make a digital copy.
  • Do not take a photo and save it in a password manager.
  • Ledger will never ask you to enter your recovery phrase on an app or website.

Installing and uninstalling apps on your Ledger

The My Ledger feature in Ledger Live allows you to easily install or uninstall apps on your Ledger device. If you are using Ledger Live for the first time, it will suggest installing a default set of apps: Bitcoin and Ethereum. If you have used Ledger Live with a Ledger device before, it will recommend reinstalling the same apps on your Ledger.

How do apps work?

  • Your Ledger device securely stores your private keys and provides access to your crypto assets.
  • For each cryptocurrency you need to install the corresponding app on your Ledger (for example the Bitcoin app for Bitcoin accounts).
  • Ledger devices have limited storage space, and app sizes vary.
  • You can safely install and uninstall apps whenever you need to. Your private keys remain safe on your device and are backed up with your Recovery Sheet.

Delete App

  • You can uninstall apps through your Ledger device or through Ledger Live.

Uninstall apps via your device

  1. Unlock your Ledger device by entering your PIN code.
  2. On the dashboard, go to the Settings icon.
